The most flexible of our MIS programs, the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies with a General Studies Learning Block online program from Southern Utah University enables you to combine various fields of focus into an individualized master’s degree. For students who have earned credit elsewhere, this is also an efficient pathway to complete your master’s degree as entering students may transfer up to 9 previous graduate credit hours into the program.

In this 100 percent online program, you will select three areas of study tailored to your personal interests and professional goals. With four learning blocks to choose from—Business Administration, Leadership, Professional Communication, and Nonprofit Management—and a variety of course choices within each, the MIS is ideal if you want a degree that integrates knowledge from a wide range of disciplines, combining breadth with depth.

  • Submit graduate application and $60 non-refundable application fee
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university
  • Minimum 3.0 overall undergraduate GPA

Courses

The MIS – General Studies Learning Block online curriculum is comprised of 10 courses (30 credit hours), including 3 credit hours of introductory coursework, 24 credit hours of coursework selected from three learning block subject areas and a 3-credit-hour capstone course. Students transferring credit hours should note the following:

  • Students may transfer up to 9 graduate credit hours (three courses) from another institution
  • Transfer credits may be across multiple subject areas as long as the student remains within the guidelines regarding completion of three learning blocks
  • Students with only 3 or 6 transfer credits may choose the remaining required credit hours in any online learning block offered by SUU as long as the student remains within the guidelines given above regarding completion of three learning blocks
All MIS students must take this introductory course.

This course will analyze the concepts of interdisciplinary study. Students draft their interdisciplinary degree plan and gain the ability to describe their interdisciplinary degree to multiple audiences. Introduction to fundamental research evaluations methods. FIXED FIRST COURSE FOR ALL MIS STUDENTS.

Students who do not hold a business undergraduate degree from an AACSB-accredited institution may be required to take BA 6000 prior to taking other courses from the Business Administration learning block.

This course provides an accelerated overview of the basic fundamentals of accounting, finance, marketing and the use of Excel that MBA students will require for success in the program. This course is waived for students with an undergraduate business degree from an AACSB-accredited institution.

This course examines the principles of organizational behavior involved in managing people and organizations in a business environment. Topics include leadership, motivation, effective teams, conflict and negotiations, power and influence, organizational culture, and change management. This course focuses on the practical application of these principles in a meaningful and ethical manner. FIXED FIRST COURSE FOR ALL MBA STUDENTS.

The purpose of the course is to enable students to prepare themselves to become leaders of organizations and to embark on paths of personal leadership development. The course requires personal curiosity and reflection from students as well as personal openness and sharing in class discussions. Leadership development concepts used in the course will be immediately applicable for students and useful for the rest of their lives.

This course reviews the development and use of management accounting information systems in planning and control activities. Using case studies of actual companies, its focus is on new management accounting practices adopted by the innovative companies around the world.

Application of microeconomic principles to business management and strategy. Includes fundamental topics in microeconomic theory, industrial organization, and organizational economics. Uses business case analysis.

This course examines the capital budgeting process, including estimating the cost of capital and cash flows, correct application of decision rules, and ways of analyzing and dealing with uncertainty in your forecasts. It also discusses key topics in financial management, such as optimal leverage, raising capital for the firm, and equity payout policies.

This course focuses on reinforcing, extending, and applying marketing concepts, principles, and techniques through readings, case studies, and secondary research.

This course provides an introduction to the strategies, techniques and requirements for managing a nonprofit organization. Students will focus on four primary categories aligned with nonprofit management: 1) fundraising, 2) financial management, 3) organizational management and 4) program development.

In this fast-paced course, students will learn how to successfully secure funding from various agencies in which a grant proposal is required. Students will learn about private and public grant-making foundations and how to properly research, prioritize, apply, and build relationships. Lastly, students will learn about the grant cycle and common mistakes to ensure proposal success.

In this fast-paced course, students will be equipped with critical and ethical skills to successfully fundraise efficiently and effectively. Students will learn how to qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward private funding for annual funds, major gifts and planned gifts. Specific strategies and tools will be highlighted to secure constituent loyalty with external and internal stakeholders. The focus will be on applying these strategies and tools within a nonprofit organization to create a positive impact.

Students will study and analyze basic leadership approaches, processes, and traits. Students will gain a foundational knowledge of leadership by identifying skills and styles of leadership. Students will draft a vision plan to include communication and innovation. The first section of a portfolio will be initiated in this course and expanding across all three courses in this leadership series will be produced.

Students will delve deeper into interpersonal portions of leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities. Students will begin to develop and apply their own individual expertise. This course will continue development of the portfolio from the first course in the series.

Students will be introduced to the psychological aspects of leadership including culture, ethics, and gender. Students will create and lead effective groups and teams. The management of operations and supply chain, including such topics as competitive strategy, product and service design, quality management, process improvements, supply chain management, work design management, logistics, and selected areas of operations research.

This course is the capstone course for the MBA, and as such, it will integrate the methods and tools developed in the curriculum to solve the strategic positioning and management issues of the organization. This course is usually taken in the student's final semester.

Using communication theory in real life. Introduction, research, and written articulation of both basic and advanced concepts of theories examining the role of applied and professional communication in human, organizational, social media, strategic, and mass media contexts.

Students will strengthen and enhance writing and presentation skills with careful attention to advanced language use required in various professional communication contexts. Students will create training sessions, press releases, digital resumes, website, social media, and marketing materials to help organizations manage their public face as well as learn how to establish and maintain their personal professional image in various contexts.

Examines influential texts (e.g., YouTube, TV, Film, Advertisements, Music, and Gaming) that students consume daily. Focuses on the ways these discourses create identity and collective understanding. Explores message forms and their implications for critical thinking and consumption.

Discusses advanced issues in advertising and public relations and how practitioners respond to and manage issues and events, with emphasis on recent research and theoretical developments, case studies, and experimental approaches.

Examines the strategic use of major social media platforms. Topics include blogging, search engine optimization, content creation, storytelling, corporate messaging, and uses and development of visual content. Students will complete an integrated social media plan with objectives, strategies, and tactics with key performance indicators and measurement.

Reputations have never been subjected to such scrutiny and crushing verdicts as in today’s court of public opinion. As perception is often reality, potential issues are typically visible long before the crisis stage. Learn how to spot common triggers, what should be in place before a crisis hits, message strategy and how to communicate the issue whether it is online attacks from a former employee, lawsuits or acts of nature. Shifting from crisis to recovery is risky; learn when and how to transition safely. All crises, big and small, can be managed by amassing relational capital across multiple audience sectors. By discovering how to develop and maintain relational capital, students will be able to apply these skills to any crisis or significant issue in their chosen industry.
All MIS students will choose one of the following capstone courses.

Provides the student with hands-on experience related to their chosen two or three disciplines from the student’s degree plan of study under the direct supervision of a qualified field expert. Only three (3) credit hours may count toward the degree.

In this course MIS students plan and complete a professional project as a required capstone experience. Learners will research and address a professional problem, then report the results. The project is practitioner-based and culminates learning from each of the three coursework-based learning blocks. Students will study and apply project management skills including proposal and assessment techniques, then carry out their project. A comprehensive report and presentation will serve as final deliverables.

A capstone experience demonstrating the ability to complete a professional thesis in consultation with the graduate committee. Students conceive, research, and produce a thesis in a relevant area of their interdisciplinary degree plan.
