Admissions

Steps to being admitted into our online Film Music Technology program

At SUU, we’ve streamlined the admission process to help you get started quickly and easily. Please read the requirements for the M.M. Music Technology – Film Music Technology Emphasis online, including what additional materials you need and where you should send them.

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • 3.0 GPA*
  • Portfolio Samples

*Students with a minimum GPA of 2.7 overall or in the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate may be considered for conditional admission but will not be eligible for graduate assistantships. Additionally, conditional admission is no guarantee of subsequent full admission.


A bachelor's degree is required; a bachelor's degree in music is preferred or the applicant must show equivalent experience within their resume and music portfolio.

Cumulative GPA requirement

Cumulative undergraduate or graduate GPA of 3.0 or in the last 60 credit hours (whichever is higher).

Portfolio samples

Audio or video recording samples showing current skill level as a performer, composer and/or technologist as links to SoundCloud, YouTube or other acceptable media pages (submitted through online application).

Transcripts

Please submit official transcripts from the college/university in which a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution was obtained.

Film Music Masters Online Degree Courses

The M.M. Music Technology – Film Music Technology Emphasis online curriculum is comprised of 10 courses (30 credit hours) including 18 credit hours of core courses and 12 credit hours in your selected area of emphasis.

An orientation and introduction to graduate study in music at Southern Utah University, focusing on program technology requirements, current readings and trends in music technology, techniques of scholarly writing, and the application of the student's personal experiences, opportunities, and ambitions as related to their anticipated career and life objectives within the music industry. The course also introduces various types of computer technology and audio hardware and its application to music, MIDI sequencing, digital recording, and hardware associated with recording. **FIXED FIRST COURSE FOR ALL MMMT STUDENTS.

A survey of the technical characteristics and performance of each component of audio recording and the recording studio. Topics include studio electronics and signal flow, computer-based digital recording and editing, recording console operations, microphone usage and placement, signal processing, and the role of the audio engineer.

This course is an in-depth study of the digital audio recording studio and its operations as it relates to the artistic, technical and business elements of the music industry. It is designed to build on concepts learned in MUSC 6323 and to help prepare students to work as studio technicians and engineers. Prerequisite(s): MUSC 6323 - Prerequisite Min. Grade: C-

An advanced formal analysis of famous film scores past and present that focuses on the ways film cues support, interact with, and enhance the scene on screen. Students will learn and use theory and vocabulary specific to film analysis, analyze film cues in depth, and share their analyses with their peers.

A focus on music technology tools, platforms and services used by the modern music entrepreneur. Study topics include office technology, copyright/licensing services, royalty collection services, distribution platforms, multi-user project platforms, and the impact, both positive and negative, that technology has had on the music business. Additional focus on using online tools and social media to establish a presence and a following of fans for the promotion of their career.

The capstone project is the culminating experience in the Master of Music degrees, demonstrating mastery and synthesis of knowledge and skills learned in the program. Prerequisite(s): MUSC 6913 or MUSC 6943 or MUSC 6953 or MUSC 6963 or Program Director permission. Prerequisite Min. Grade: C- **FIXED LAST COURSE FOR ALL MMMT STUDENTS.

This course focuses on the creation of realistic, electronically produced mockups of orchestral compositions. Students will make an in-depth study of sample based virtual instruments and their manipulation through Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI). Emphasis will be placed on achieving realism by controlling various MIDI parameters. This course is an elective of the Master of Music in Music Technology degree program.

An introduction to the technology and techniques used to compose music for film, video, and TV, such as reading/scoring the dramatic arc of a scene, creating professional MIDI mock-ups, mixing audios, interacting and communicating effectively with a director, and budgeting. Prerequisite(s): MUSC 6603
Duration: 7 Weeks weeks
Credit Hours: 3
This course relies heavily on group project work with peers in the class. Students will prepare for a scoring session/recording session, and carry out the recording project in a completely remote work environment. Each student will have the opportunity to participate in multiple projects sequentially, and to fill a role of the personnel in a film production’s music department (i.e. composer, MIDI orchestrator, music mixer, music editor, etc.).

A prerequisite to the Capstone Project Presentation (MUSC 6973) that helps students in the Film Music Technology track identify their capstone project, complete a section of their supporting research paper each week, and work on the assets in their creative capstone project.
