In which online degree program do you teach?

  • Which classes do you teach online?

COMM 6110: Mediated Communication in Relationships; COMM 6230: Professional Social Media

  • What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?

In Mediated Communication In Relationships, students will gain a theoretical and practical understanding in the field of CMC and learn how this influences their identity and personal relationships. In Professional Social Media, they will learn the practical essentials of developing a social media marketing plan, setting goals, identifying strategies and implementing tactics across multiple social media platforms.

  • Why did you start teaching?

I love interacting with students; I think they keep me young. I love being involved in the learning process and enjoy watching the "light bulb" moments of when students "get it." I really think school is more than just learning a subject, but learning how to learn.

  • What advice would you give to those considering this program?

Take a proactive role in your learning. Since you are not restricted to a classroom and time for course management, you'll need to be more engaged in the process of the learning. Don't hesitate to ask for help.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in professional communication?

A successful social media specialist has the ability to build quality relationships. They will need to interact with a diverse group of people including the public, potential investors, employees, customers, peers, competitors and media. It is important to learn how to turn these relationships into beneficial connections.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in professional communication face today?

Social media is constantly evolving. It changes so fast that whether it is being used as a marketing/PR tool or to maintain personal relationships, staying current and cutting through the noise can be a daunting process.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know.

I love coffee and shoes. Not just any coffee and not just any shoes. I roast my own single origin coffee and experiment with the brewing process to taste the different profiles. As for shoes, I buy too many dress shoes. I think they're my midlife crisis. Good dress shoes are both comfortable and stylish.
