This unique, fully online degree program will enable working musicians to master the technology and techniques used to create music and audio for use in video, film, TV production, and more. The Master of Music in Music Technology – Performance Technology Emphasis is taught by a faculty of accomplished music professionals and is designed to give you the tools and knowledge you need to maximize your reach and employability as a musician, technician, producer or educator.

Study a variety of topics related to live sound and concert production—including sound reinforcement, concert promotion, budgeting and legal issues—and gain familiarity with music technology tools, platforms and services used by the modern music entrepreneur. Throughout this hands-on program, you will collaborate with a community of highly engaged and motivated peers and faculty committed to high-level learning. Prepare to graduate with a solid music portfolio to help you stand out in the music industry.

You will also complete a capstone project demonstrating mastery and synthesis of skills gained in the program and how those can be applied to artistic/professional experience and ambitions.

In this program, you will:

  • Gain proficiency in digital music notation software; essential concepts include template creation, note entry, changing meter, clefs and keys, part polyphony, preparation for publishing, and methods for exporting files
  • Explore techniques used in the creation of audio and video for use in social media including how to use social media outlets as a tool for promotion, and the monetization of channels and accounts
  • Study the creation of realistic, electronically produced mockups of orchestral compositions and make an in-depth study of sample-based virtual instruments and their manipulation through MIDI

At SUU, we’ve streamlined the admission process to help you get started quickly and easily. Please read the requirements for the M.M. Music Technology – Performance Technology Emphasis online, including what additional materials you need and where you should send them. Requirements include:

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • 3.0 GPA*
  • Portfolio Samples

*Students with a minimum GPA of 2.7 overall or in the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate may be considered for conditional admission but will not be eligible for graduate assistantships. Additionally, conditional admission is no guarantee of subsequent full admission.


A bachelor’s degree in music is preferred or the applicant must show equivalent experience within their resume and music portfolio.

Cumulative GPA requirement

Cumulative undergraduate or graduate GPA of 3.0 or in the last 60 credit hours (whichever is higher).

Portfolio samples

Audio or video recording samples showing current skill level as a performer, composer and/or technologist as links to SoundCloud, YouTube or other acceptable media pages (submitted through online application).

Transcripts

Please submit official transcripts from the college/university in which a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution was obtained.

  • Applicants who have graduated from SUU do not need to submit a transcript
  • International transcripts must include a transcript evaluation from a third-party service such as SpanTran or WES showing that the degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree

The M.M. Music Technology – Performance Technology Emphasis online curriculum is comprised of 10 courses (30 credit hours) including 18 credit hours of core courses and 12 credit hours in your selected area of emphasis.

An orientation and introduction to graduate study in music at Southern Utah University, focusing on program technology requirements, current readings and trends in music technology, techniques of scholarly writing, and the application of the student's personal experiences, opportunities, and ambitions as related to their anticipated career and life objectives within the music industry. The course also introduces various types of computer technology and audio hardware and its application to music, MIDI sequencing, digital recording, and hardware associated with recording. **FIXED FIRST COURSE FOR ALL MMMT STUDENTS.

A survey of the technical characteristics and performance of each component of audio recording and the recording studio. Topics include studio electronics and signal flow, computer-based digital recording and editing, recording console operations, microphone usage and placement, signal processing, and the role of the audio engineer.

This is a survey course dealing with a wide variety of topics related to live sound including knowledge of sound systems, review of audio fundamentals, and sound propagation in various acoustic environments. Prerequisite(s): MUSC 6323 - Prerequisite Min. Grade: C

Instruction in theory analysis of electronic, popular, commercial and film music, linking each theory practice with the art or artists throughout popular music history. Using concepts derived from the analysis, students will compose original works in the style or genre under review in each module. The focus will be on analysis and composition within the context of Popular Music History. Specific artists, groups, festivals and technologies will be studied along with their impact on their time as well as current trends.

A focus on music technology tools, platforms and services used by the modern music entrepreneur. Study topics include office technology, copyright/licensing services, royalty collection services, distribution platforms, multi-user project platforms, and the impact, both positive and negative, that technology has had on the music business. Additional focus on using online tools and social media to establish a presence and a following of fans for the promotion of their career.

The capstone project is the culminating experience in the Master of Music degrees, demonstrating mastery and synthesis of knowledge and skills learned in the program. Prerequisite(s): MUSC 6913 or MUSC 6943 or MUSC 6953 or MUSC 6963 or Program Director permission. Prerequisite Min. Grade: C- **FIXED LAST COURSE FOR ALL MMMT STUDENTS.

This course focuses on the creation of realistic, electronically produced mockups of orchestral compositions. Students will make an in-depth study of sample based virtual instruments and their manipulation through Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI). Emphasis will be placed on achieving realism by controlling various MIDI parameters. This course is an elective of the Master of Music in Music Technology degree program.

An overview of the technology and techniques used in the creation of music and audio for the use in video, film and TV production. Concepts to be studied include basic video shooting techniques, synchronization and SMPTE time code, spotting, field audio recording, dialog replacement, Foley, and the use of software editing platform.

Students acquire an intermediate skill level in the usage of Finale music notation software. Course activities focus on the role of score preparation, part extraction, workflow, and preparation for publishing. Differing formats will also be explored such as full score, parts, lead sheets, etc.

The course is designed to help students prepare the Capstone Project, which is the culminating experience of the major. Topics include research, development, implementation and completion of the Capstone Project. This project should show synthesis of skills learned in the program, as well as application to students’ artistic/professional experience and ambitions in the music industry. The final presentation of the Capstone Project takes place in MUSC 6973.
