What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?
Students in my courses work on their passion projects in the form of capstone projects, the outcome of which is a portfolio worthy of launching them in the direction of their chosen career path.
Why did you start teaching?
I started teaching because I loved the challenge presented to me to help create a master’s degree in music delivered entirely online. I still see this as an exciting challenge, and am humbled by the success the program has exhibited.
What advice would you give to those considering the online Master of Music in Music Technology program?
You will get out of this endeavor as much as you put into it. If you approach each assignment with the goal of creating something that showcases you, and with an eye toward what you want your intended career to be, you’ll graduate with enough assets to show a decent portfolio to prospective employers.
What qualities make someone particularly successful in the music industry?
Persistence, flexibility and creativity. Often a career in music is made of many gigs pieced together, and a few day jobs mixed in at times. Musicians who are persistent and have a robust “toolbox” full of varied skills are typically always working.
What do you think are the biggest challenges that people in the music industry face today?
Work/life balance, discouragement and imposter syndrome
