You must meet the following requirements for admission to the RN to BSN online program.

  • Complete an online application and submit a $50.00 non-refundable application fee.
  • Undergraduate cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or 2.5 in the last 60 hours).
  • Submit all official transcripts to SUU.
  • Provide a copy of unencumbered RN license OR provide the date scheduled to take NCLEX-RN.

Courses

For the RN to BSN online, you must complete 10 core nursing courses (30 credit hours). Students must have a minimum total of 120 credit hours in order to earn a bachelor’s degree, including general education requirements.

Students will be awarded 20 credit hours of Lower Division coursework for successful completion of the NCLEX exam and 10 credit hours of Upper Division coursework via Prior Learning Assessment. Awarding of this credit will be completed during NURS 3141: Foundations of Professional Nursing for the RN to BSN. In addition, 49 hours of the 60 required general education hours may be block transferred.

Students must complete the following nursing core courses.

NURS 3121: Health Assessment for the RN to BSN

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course enhances health assessment across the lifespan through development of interviewing and physical assessment skills for the RN. Learning objectives focus on developing skills to conduct a comprehensive health assessment.

NURS 3141: Foundations of Professional Nursing for the RN to BSN

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course introduces the theoretical and practice concepts upon which nursing is based. Students will explore professional writing and skills, evidence-based practice, historical development of nursing, health teaching, and principles of health promotion.

NURS 3261: Health Promotion and Education for the RN to BSN

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course focuses on the exploration of health promotion and disease prevention across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on health risk factors, preparation for health teaching using teaching and learning principles, and assessment of learner needs and readiness to learn.

NURS 4341: Nursing for Wellness in Older Adults for the RN to BSN

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course examines the needs of older adults addressing emotional, social, physiologic, and behavioral changes. This course focuses on ageism, gender issues, chronicity, death and dying, loss, and life review in support of wellness of the aging adult. This course includes a direct patient clinical component.

NURS 4351: Community Health Nursing for RN to BSN

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course introduces theory, concepts, and practices of community health nursing with an emphasis on culturally sensitive care for individuals, families, and groups in a variety of community settings. This also includes identification of community resources for implementing change to provide community health. This course includes a direct patient clinical component.

NURS 4361: Essentials of Evidence Based Practice for RN to BSN

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course provides experience in understanding and applying basic principles, evaluation, and implementation of research in evidence-based practice.

NURS 4471: Management of the Complex Patient for RN to BSN

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course focuses on the management of patients with multiple complex health problems. The course is designed to prepare healthcare professionals to manage patients with multiple co- morbidities throughout the lifespan.

NURS 4441: Contemporary Issues in Nursing for the RN to BSN

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course explores the nursing role in the context of current legal, ethical, political, and economic issues. Students develop skills to influence decisions on issues that impact health for individuals and populations.

NURS 4421: Influencing Quality Within Healthcare

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course introduces theory, concepts, and practices related to influencing change in policies, systems, and environments with an emphasis on healthcare organizations. Course concepts include – organizational change theory, identification of resources and barriers to change at organizational and systems level, and adoption of evidence-based models of care at all levels of the ecological framework.

NURS 4551: Leadership and Management for the RN to BSN

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course discusses historical, contemporary, and current management and leadership concepts while exploring self-application techniques and models through individual leadership abilities and styles. This course includes a direct patient clinical component.

Students must complete the following general education courses if they have not yet completed them.

POLS 1100: American National Government

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course evaluates the source of democratic ideas and principles of the constitutional system. Cultural, group, party, and governmental influences on the process of public policymaking. The administration and impact of public policy.

ENG 2010: Intermediate Writing

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This writing courses emphasizes the development of an effective academic style in argumentative essays that makes use of traditional rhetorical patterns, culminating in a major research paper. Subtopics will vary.

INFO 1010: Information Literacy

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 1

An introduction to the library research process and related information skills such as developing a research question, searching, finding, and evaluating sources, synthesizing information across sources, using information ethically, and reflecting on the research process. Corequisite to ENG 2010.

MATH 1040: Statistics Duration: 8 weeks

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 4

An introduction to the basic concepts and methods of statistical data analysis. Students will summarize and interpret data, evaluate important assumptions, and draw appropriate conclusions based on sample data sets from a variety of disciplines. Topics include descriptive statistics, statistical graphs, probability, discrete and continuous probability distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests with one and two samples, correlation and regression, chi-square tests and one-way ANOVA.
