Career Highlights:
While working at Emory & Henry College in Southwest Virginia, I proposed and developed a new course, Social Media Theory and Practice, for the mass communication program. I was the faculty advisor for our weekly 30-minute live broadcast show, EHC-TV. I became a governing member of the Women and Gender Studies collective, assisting with workshops and developing curriculum for the WGST minor.
I was a board member for Abuse Alternatives, Inc. (an organization that provides programs and services to domestic violence survivors and their children) and served as the publicity chair. I was invited as a panelist for Community Conversations About Race: A Moderated Panel Discussion, located at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum.
In which online degree program do you teach?
What do you teach online?
Pop culture, communication research and special topics.
What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?
Students will not only become better professional communicators–they also learn about diversity, gender and identity issues that impact our current society. I want students to become informed and engaged global citizens.
Why did you start teaching?
I wanted to be a resource for students that can enable, educate and encourage future professionals to pursue their career goals and overcome obstacles that I overcame as a minority. I have personally heard of the struggles that my students have faced including divorce, lack of childcare, lack of financial support, no transportation for those who commute, and a lack of knowledge about how to successfully utilize campus resources. It has not been an easy road for me, but I feel that I should also share my journey as an African American woman pursuing higher education in hopes of helping other minorities and first generation students.
What advice would you give to those considering this program?
The faculty at SUU are very engaged in the program and offer many resources and support for our students. I believe the experience and expertise of our faculty will prepare students to become communication professionals in any field possible.
